چکیده

Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a conceptually driven, multicomponent strategy for implementing guidelines to improve akathisia in schizophrenia. Methods: Patients included in the study were recruited from 6 Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (VAMCs) that were split into geographically matched pairs with 3 VAMCs receiving basic education and 3 receiving enhanced intervention to promote guideline-concordant treatment and patient adherence. Results: Of 293 patients with baseline and 6-month follow-up Barnes Akathisia Rating Scale (BARS) scores, results of both nonparametric and parametric repeated measures ANOVA showed several significant Vol. 3, No. 4, Fall 2003 • The Journal of Applied Research 470 The Effect of Guideline Implementation Strategies on Akathisia Outcomes in Schizophrenia D. Effect of Vitamin B6 versus Propranolol on Antipsychotic-Induced Akathisia: A pilot comparative double-blind study

Background: Akathisia is a common adverse effect of antipsychotic drugs and is characterized by subjective feelings of restlessness. First-line treatment usually consists of propranolol, a beta adrenergic antagonist. However, propranolol does not seem to be efficacious in up to 70% of patients. This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin B6 versus propranolol on antipsychotic-induced...

Intravenous biperiden in akathisia: an open pilot study.

OBJECTIVE Antipsychotic-induced akathisia can be distressing and unendurable for prolonged periods. It has been shown that intramuscular biperiden is a relatively rapid and effective treatment for akathisia. However, the intravenous administration of biperiden may provide a more rapid effect, although this remains to be definitively proven. METHOD The subjects obtained for this study met the ...

Role of aripiprazole in treatment-resistant schizophrenia

About one third of patients with schizophrenia respond unsatisfactorily to antipsychotic treatment and are termed "treatment-resistant". Clozapine is still the gold standard in these cases. However, 40%-70% of patients do not improve sufficiently on clozapine either. In the search for more efficacious strategies for treatment-resistant schizophrenia, drugs with different pharmacological profile...

Serum iron and ferritin in acute neuroleptic akathisia.

Acute akathisia is a common and disturbing side effect of classic antipsychotic medication. Some evidence suggests a role for iron deficiency in chronic and tardive akathisia. In acute akathisia, however, the data are contradictory. Serum iron and ferritin levels of 33 inpatients with acute akathisia during classic neuroleptic medication were compared with those of 23 patients on classic neurol...
